A SERVICE OF EVENING PRAYER

October 28, 2021

Prelude

    Be Thou My Vision
         ELW 793   (vs. 1,4)

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
naught be all else to me, save that thou art:
thou my best thought both by day and by night,
waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

 Light of my soul, after victory won,
may I reach heaven's joys, O heaven's Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

     Calm to the Waves

  ELW 794   (x 2)

Calm to the waves.
Calm to the wind.
Jesus whispers, "Peace, be still."
Balm to our hearts.
Fears at an end.
In stillness, hear his voice.

Welcome

Call to Worship

Jesus Christ is the light of the world,
    the light no darkness can overcome.
Stay with us, Lord, for it is evening,
    and the day is almost over.
    Let your light scatter the darkness
    and illumine your church.

Confession and Forgiveness

God of all mercy and consolation,
 come to the aid of your people,
    turning us from our sin
    to live for you alone.
Give us the power of your Holy Spirit
    that, attentive to your Word,
    we may confess our sins,
    receive your forgiveness,
    and grow into the fullness of your Son,
    Jesus Christ our Lord.
    Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the
presence of God and of one another.

Gracious God,
    have mercy on us.
    In your compassion
    forgive us our sins,
    known and unknown,
    things done and left undone.
    Uphold us by your Spirit
    so that we may live and serve you
    in newness of life,
    to the honor and glory of your holy name;
    through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on you,
    forgive you all your sins
    through our Lord Jesus Christ,
    strengthen you in all goodness,
    and by the power of the Holy Spirit
    keep you in eternal life.
    Amen.

Thanksgiving for Light
    The Lord be with you.
    And also with you.
    Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
    It is right to give our thanks and praise.

    We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning you called light into being,
    and you set lights in the sky to govern night and day.
    In a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night
    you led your people into freedom.
    Enlighten our darkness by the light of your Christ; may your Word be
    a lamp to our feet and a light to our path; for you are merciful,
    and you love your whole creation, and with all your creatures we give you glory,
    through your Son Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
    now and forever.
Amen.

Prayer
Almighty God, gracious Lord, we thank you that your Holy Spirit renews the church in every age. Pour out your Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep them steadfast in your word, protect and comfort them in times of trial, defend them against all enemies of the gospel, and bestow on the church your saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

Psalm 46

1God is our refuge and strength,
 a very present help in trouble.
 2Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,
 though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
 3though its waters roar and foam,
 though the mountains tremble with its tumult.
Selah
 4There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
 the holy habitation of the Most High.
 5God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved;
 God will help it when the morning dawns.
 6The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter;
 he utters his voice, the earth melts.
 7The LORD of hosts is with us;
 the God of Jacob is our refuge.
Selah
 8Come, behold the works of the LORD;
 see what desolations he has brought on the earth.
 9He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
 he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear;
 he burns the shields with fire.
 10"Be still, and know that I am God!
 I am exalted among the nations,
 I am exalted in the earth."
 11The LORD of hosts is with us;
 the God of Jacob is our refuge.
Selah

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be.  Amen.

Psalm 143

 1Hear my prayer, O LORD;
 give ear to my supplications in your faithfulness;
 answer me in your righteousness.
 2Do not enter into judgment with your servant,
 for no one living is righteous before you.
 3For the enemy has pursued me,
 crushing my life to the ground,
 making me sit in darkness like those long dead.
 4Therefore my spirit faints within me;
 my heart within me is appalled.
 5I remember the days of old,
 I think about all your deeds,
 I meditate on the works of your hands.
 6I stretch out my hands to you;
 my soul thirsts for you like a parched land.
Selah
 7Answer me quickly, O LORD;
 my spirit fails.
 Do not hide your face from me,
 or I shall be like those who go down to the Pit.
 8Let me hear of your steadfast love in the morning,
 for in you I put my trust.
 Teach me the way I should go,
 for to you I lift up my soul.
 9Save me, O LORD, from my enemies;
 I have fled to you for refuge.
 10Teach me to do your will,
 for you are my God.
 Let your good spirit lead me
 on a level path.
 11For your name's sake, O LORD, preserve my life.
 In your righteousness bring me out of trouble.
 12In your steadfast love cut off my enemies,
 and destroy all my adversaries,
 for I am your servant.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be.  Amen.

Reading:  Jeramiah 31:31-34

31The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt — a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. 33But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the LORD," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Reflection

Response

    Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets,
    but in these last days God has spoken to us by the Son.

Gospel Canticle  (together)

    Magnificat
        A Prayer-Paraphrase of Luke 1: 46-55

We praise you, Lord,
                and our spirits rejoice in you – our Saviour;

For you take notice of the unnoticeable,
            and transform them into the blessed;
You are strong and true to yourself and all that is good
            in everything you are and do and say;
            and you do great things for us;

Through the ages you have shown compassion
            to those who trust you,
And in your strength you have scattered
            those who are arrogant and abusive;

You have made the thrones of tyrants topple
            and you have made humble people into leaders of many;
You have cared for and provided for those who have nothing,
            and you have left the over-satisfied with empty hands;

You have always been a help to your people,
            and have shown mercy when we have gone astray;
You made this promise to our ancestors,
            and you continue to stay true to it even now.

We praise you, Lord,
            and our spirits rejoice in you – our Saviour.
Amen.

Thanksgiving for Salvation

Surely God is my salvation;
 I will trust, and will not be afraid,
 for the Lord GOD is my strength and my might;
 he has become my salvation.
With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.
And you will say in that day:
 Give thanks to the LORD,
 call on his name;
 make known his deeds among the nations;
 proclaim that his name is exalted.
 Sing praises to the LORD, for he has done gloriously;
 let this be known in all the earth.
Shout aloud and sing for joy, O royal Zion,
for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.

Prayers

    For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord,
    Lord, have mercy.

For the well-being of the church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.

For this holy assembly and for all who offer here their worship and praise and prayer, let us pray to the Lord.
    Lord, have mercy.

For the people and nations of the world engaged in war and violence of all kinds, that peace may be restored, let us pray.
   Lord, have mercy.

For our country, that angry vitriol may subside and concern for the common good may grow, let us pray to the Lord.
    Lord, have mercy.

For public servants, the government, and those who protect us; for those who work to bring peace, justice, healing, and protection in this and every place, let us pray to the Lord.
    Lord, have mercy.

For deliverance in the times of affliction, wrath, danger, and need, let us pray to the Lord.
    Lord, have mercy.

    Lord, have mercy.

For all servants of the church, for all followers and disciples of Jesus, and for all people who await from the Lord great and abundant mercy, let us pray to the Lord.
    Lord, have mercy.

Gracious God,
you have given us much today;
grant us also a thankful spirit.
Into your hands we commend ourselves
and those we love.
Be with us still, and when we take our rest
renew us for the service of your Son Jesus Christ.
Amen.

In darkness and in light,
in trouble and in joy,
help us, heavenly Father,
to trust your love,
to serve your purpose,
and to praise your name,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.     Amen.

Lord's Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
    hallowed be your name,
    your kingdom come,
    your will be done,
        on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
    as we forgive those
        who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
    and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
    and the glory are yours,
    now and forever. Amen

Benediction
The guarding of the God of life be on you,
The guarding of loving Christ be on you,
The guarding of Holy Spirit be on you

To aid you and enfold you
Each day and night of your lives.
In the name of the Father,
and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Postlude

      Joyous Light of Heavenly Glory
            ELW 561

Joyous light of heav'nly glory,
loving glow of God's own face,
you who sing creation's story,
shine on ev'ry land and race.
Now as evening falls around us,
we shall raise our songs to you.
God of daybreak, God of shadows,
come and light our hearts anew.

In the stars that grace the darkness,
in the blazing sun of dawn,
in the light of peace and wisdom,
we can hear your quiet song.
Love that fills the night with wonder,
love that warms the weary soul,
love that bursts all chains asunder,
set us free and make us whole.

You who made the heaven's splendor,
ev'ry dancing star of night,
make us shine with gentle justice,
let us each reflect your light.
Mighty God of all creation,
gentle Christ who lights our way,
loving Spirit of salvation,
lead us on to endless day.
