A SERVICE OF EVENING PRAYER

PRELUDE

     Joyous Light of Heavenly Glory    ELW  561

Joyous light of heav'nly glory,
loving glow of God's own face,
you who sing creation's story,
shine on ev'ry land and race.
Now as evening falls around us,
we shall raise our songs to you.
God of daybreak, God of shadows,
come and light our hearts anew.

In the stars that grace the darkness,
in the blazing sun of dawn,
in the light of peace and wisdom,
we can hear your quiet song.
Love that fills the night with wonder,
love that warms the weary soul,
love that bursts all chains asunder,
set us free and make us whole.

You who made the heaven's splendor,
ev'ry dancing star of night,
make us shine with gentle justice,
let us each reflect your light.
Mighty God of all creation,
gentle Christ who lights our way,
loving Spirit of salvation,
lead us on to endless day.

     We All Are One in Mission  (vs. 1 & 3)    ELW  576

We all are one in mission;
we all are one in call,
our varied gifts united
by Christ, the Lord of all.
A single great commission
compels us from above
to plan and work together
that all may know Christ's love.

Now let us be united,
and let our song be heard.
Now let us be a vessel
for God's redeeming Word.
We all are one in mission;
we all are one in call,
our varied gifts united
by Christ, the Lord of all.

WELCOME

DIALOGUE

From God comes my salvation.
For God alone my soul waits in silence.
God alone is my rock and my salvation.
God is my fortress; I shall never be shaken.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

Trusting in the promise of grace,
let us pour out our hearts before God.

Forgiving God,
we repent of all the ways we turn from you.
You call, but we do not listen;
you show us your path, but we prefer our own way.
Forgive us, heal us, and lead us back to you,
that we might show mercy to others.
In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

This is the word of the Lord:
in + Jesus Christ, you are forgiven by God and given new life.

COLLECT
Let us pray.
Almighty God, by grace alone you call us and accept us in your service. Strengthen us by your Spirit, and make us worthy of your call, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.

Psalm 119:41-48
 41Let your steadfast love come to me, O LORD,
 your salvation according to your promise.
 42Then I shall have an answer for those who taunt me,
 for I trust in your word.
 43Do not take the word of truth utterly out of my mouth,
 for my hope is in your ordinances.
 44I will keep your law continually,
 forever and ever.
 45I shall walk at liberty,
 for I have sought your precepts.
 46I will also speak of your decrees before kings,
 and shall not be put to shame;
 47I find my delight in your commandments,
 because I love them.
 48I revere your commandments, which I love,
 and I will meditate on your statutes.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now and ever
shall be. Amen.

Psalm 62:5-12
5For God alone my soul waits in silence,
 for my hope is from him.
 6He alone is my rock and my salvation,
 my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
 7On God rests my deliverance and my honor;
 my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.
 8Trust in him at all times, O people;
 pour out your heart before him;
 God is a refuge for us.
Selah
 9Those of low estate are but a breath,
 those of high estate are a delusion;
 in the balances they go up;
 they are together lighter than a breath.
 10Put no confidence in extortion,
 and set no vain hopes on robbery;
 if riches increase, do not set your heart on them.
 11Once God has spoken;
 twice have I heard this:
 that power belongs to God,
 12and steadfast love belongs to you, O LORD.
 For you repay to all
 according to their work.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now and ever
shall be. Amen.

Mark 1:14-20
14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near, repent, and believe in the good news."
16As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea — for they were fishermen. 17And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you fish for people." 18And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.

REFLECTION

RESPONSE

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.

Whoever follows me will never walk in
darkness.

OFFERING
Merciful God, you have saved us out of your steadfast love for all you have created. Renew in us an enlivened dedication as we commit to you ourselves, our time and our possessions. Make us fishers of people following in the way of your Son in whose name we pray. Amen.

GOSPEL CANTICLE  (together)
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for you, Lord,
have looked with favor on your lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me bless’d:
you, the Almighty, have done great things for me and holy is your name.
You have mercy on those who fear you,
from generation to generation.
You have shown strength with your arm
and scattered the proud in their conceit,
casting down the mighty from their thrones
and lifting up the lowly.
You have filled the hungry with good things
and sent the rich away empty.
You have come to the aid of your servant Israel,
to remember the promise of mercy, the promise made
to our forebears, to Abraham and his children forever.
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.

APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
    creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
    who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
    born of the virgin Mary,
    suffered under Pontius Pilate,
    was crucified, died, and was buried;
    he descended to the dead.
    On the third day he rose again;
    he ascended into heaven,
    he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
    and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
    the holy catholic church,
    the communion of saints,
    the forgiveness of sins,
    the resurrection of the body,
    and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS

Let us pray.
God of new visions, we pray for people highly placed in power, that they may focus their eyes on you. And we pray for the lowly victims of power, that they may also focus their eyes on you. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for those who bless with their lips but curse with their mouths, including ourselves. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for those who are ill and those facing the end of life. Give them the gift of prayer, that they may pour out their hearts to you. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for the church and its leaders, that we may hear and respond to your call to be fishers of people. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Rock of our salvation, through Christ and your Holy Spirit bring us into the new world that you are shaping even as this world is passing away.
Amen.

LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven,
    hallowed be thy name,
    thy kingdom come,
    thy will be done,
        on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
    as we forgive those
         who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
    but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
    and the power, and the glory,
    forever and ever. Amen.

BENEDICTION

May the God of second chances renew our sense of call and inspire us to go out and share the good news of forgiveness and hope!

And may the blessing of God, who is Father, + Son and Holy Spirit be upon you beloved of the Lord, now and forever. Amen.

POSTLUDE

Will You Come and Follow Me (vs. 1, 2, 5)     ELW  798

"Will you come and follow me
if I but call your name?
Will you go where you don't know
and never be the same?
Will you let my love be shown,
will you let my name be known,
will you let my life be grown
in you and you in me?

"Will you leave yourself behind
if I but call your name?
Will you care for cruel and kind
and never be the same?
Will you risk the hostile stare,
should your life attract or scare?
Will you let me answer pray'r
in you and you in me?

Lord, your summons echoes true
when you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you
and never be the same.
In your company I'll go
where your love and footsteps show.
Thus I'll move and live and grow
in you and you in me.
